Frequently Asked Questions for Patients

1. Why am I being referred to Mobile CT Imaging?
Your doctor recommends this state-of-the-art Cone Beam CT imaging to patients where highly detailed visualization of anatomic structures is required for proper diagnosis and treatment. These 3-D images, combined with your health history and a thorough clinical examination help assure that you receive the highest quality care.

2. How long does the appointment take?
The 3-D CT scan takes about 20 seconds. Most appointments take 30 minutes or less. If you have special instructions, disabilities or even anxiety, please mention these when scheduling. We will allow extra time to accommodate your needs.

3. Does it hurt?
No. Some patients may be asked by their referring doctor to wear a specially-designed mouth splint if the images will be utilized for computer-guided dental implant planning. For patients familiar with a standard panoramic x-ray machine, the scan will be similar-but will result in three-dimensional images!

4. What do I need to bring to my appointment?
By law, you must bring a signed referral form from your referring doctor. For dental implant planning or jaw joint studies, your dentist may provide a scanning prosthesis to be utilized as well. If you normally wear a full or partial dentures, bring those also.

5. Will you bill my insurance?
We ask that all imaging studies be paid for in full the day of service. Accepted forms of payment are cash, Visa, and Mastercard. We will provide you with dental/medical insurance codes and forms to obtain possible reimbursement directly from your insurance company. Mobile CT Imaging is not a Medicare/Medi-Cal provider.

6. Can I have copies of my records?
All images and photographs are part of your clinical records and therefore will be initially sent within 1-2 days to your referring doctor. You may request copies directly from your referring doctor.

7. Why do I have to remove my jewelry?
Items such as earrings, necklaces, piercings, and hair clips interfere with the quality of the scan."

8. Are these scans safe?
Yes. One of the distinct advantages of Cone Beam CT imaging versus standard hospital-based CT scans is the decreased radiation dosage and patient-friendly environment. The amount of radiation needed for one of our all-digital scans is about 70% less than a full-mouth set of dental x-rays, less than a standard dental panoramic x-ray and equivalent to 2 days of background environmental exposure by living in the United States. We are annually inspected and approved for radiation safety by the state of California."

Frequently Asked Questions for Doctors

1. What does Cone Beam CT offer over conventional panoramic or cephalometric x-rays?
Cone Beam CT or Cone Beam Volumetric Imaging acquires digital images with less radiation, at a true 1:1 display, with extraordinary detail of anatomical structures, and the ability to manipulate views of their patient's images.

2. How much radiation (micro-sieverts) does the patient receive per scan?
Cone Beam CT delivers less exposure than conventional studies but gives the dentist much more detailed information. Generally the patient will only have 1 or 2 scans during their visit depending on the image survey the doctor prescribes. In general, Cone Beam CT delivers only 12 micro-sieverts per scan which is equivalent to a ¼ panoramic image or about 5 periapical x-rays. In comparison, a medical CT scan delivers 830-1263 micro-sieverts, while a conventional panoramic x-ray delivers 20-100 micro-sieverts.

3. How long does the appointment take?
A typical appointment will last from 30-45 minutes depending on the type of Cone Beam CT study prescribed. The Cone Beam CT scan itself is approximately 20 seconds.

4. What am I able to see in Cone Beam CT scans?
Cone Beam CT allows dentists to see anatomical structures with much detail. Anatomical anomalies such as the inferior alveolar nerve wrapped around an impacted third molar, bony dehiscences or fenestrations, questions about buccal/lingual structure locations, or even pathology are much more easily seen on a Cone Beam CT scan than conventional methods.

5. How are the images delivered to me?
Choice A: We provide you the complete file either online or on CD which is about 250mb. You can then view and interpret the file with Dolphin software or another DICOM reader.
Choice B: We convert the images to your desired study (e.g. implant, panoramic, cephalometric, TMJ, third molar, sinus, airway, inferior alveolar). After conversion we provide you with a printout, file, and/or CD of the Cone Beam CT scan with your desired study(ies).
Additional Service Choice: Radiologic interpretation of the scans and report by an Oral Radiologist. Mobile CT Imaging strongly encourages our doctors to take advantage of this valuable service.

6. How long does it take to get the results of my patient's Cone Beam CT?
Typically from the time of the Cone Beam CT scan it will take about a week for the scans to be processed and/or interpreted. You will receive an email from us to check your account and you will be able to access your patient's images from there. If you want a CD or print-outs to be delivered to your office, then we expect the time to increase to 8-10 days, depending on mail service.

7. Who pays for the scans?
Because Mobile CT Imaging is an independent imaging center, patients must make their payment prior to or at the time of service. We will do our best to provide your patient with the appropriate dental/medical codes and forms to submit their own claim to their insurance provider. Mobile CT is not a Medicare or Medi-Cal provider.

8. How do I arrange for my patient to have a scan by Mobile CT Imaging?
A. Please fill out a Mobile CT Imaging prescription form with your desired Cone Beam CT scan study, photographic study, desire for scan interpretation by Beam Readers, and method of delivery being hardcopy, CD, or online file pickup.
B. Keep a copy of the prescription form in the patient's chart.
C. Your staff or the patient can call 1-888-CT-SCAN-Van (1-888-287-2268) to arrange a convenient time and location for the scan to be taken. By law, your patient must bring a copy of the prescription to their appointment.
